About Us

A group of Christians who went from house to house “lifting up the name of God” founded Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church in 1870.  They first began meeting together in a shaded area Bush Arbor.  The land for this meeting area was donated by The Social Benevolent Society No. 5.  Later, monetary funds were donated, and a church building was erected.  The church was named Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church because it was surrounded by hickory trees and because it was located on a hill. Our many respective pastors have shaped, guided, and strengthened the congregations through the years. With their preaching, teaching, and administration, we have been blessed.  The church, which had suffered their first fire in 1880, and experienced a second fire. Services were held in The Hickory Hill School located across the street from the church and in the Zion C.M.E. Society Hall. Which now faced north/south instead of the original east/west. The new structure had a larger choir loft/stand, new pews, and their first piano.  Years later, the same structure had to be remodeled after storm damage.  A New sanctuary was built in 1975, and the old sanctuary was converted into classrooms and a kitchen. A baptism pool was installed, and a church bus was purchased. The church also purchased Terrell’s Christian Bookstore.  Later, the bookstore operated out of the area that is presently the nursery classroom. In 1983, was appointed the church’s first Christian Education Director.

Rodney Steward is the Senior Pastor of Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Steward has served in this capacity since November 2018. He accepted Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior at an early age. Pastor Steward works diligently to ensure that Hickory Hill maintains a family atmosphere. He is very accessible to every member of his congregation and every member takes joy in talking with Pastor Steward.

His strong belief in the importance of family values was reared by his parents and grandparents. Pastor Steward lives each day believing the biblical truth of John 14:1-3. Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Farther’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may also be. He is a humble and gracious man and he is convinced that God has given him the desire and gifts to serve him through discipleship ministries.

He was born in Chicago IL and was raised in Ashland MS. Pastor Steward is the husband to Cheryl and they are blessed with five children and five grandchildren.
